Frequently Asked Questions: Toyota Tacoma Skid Plates
Skid plates are heavy-duty metal shields that protect the vulnerable underside of a Tacoma — like the engine, transmission, transfer case, and fuel tank — from rocks, ruts, logs and other trail hazards. Factory covers are often thin or plastic; quality skid plates give us real peace of mind off-road.
Yes — RCI offers Tacoma skid plates designed to fit multiple generations, including 1st-gen (1995–2004), 2nd-gen (2005–2015), 3rd-gen (2016–2023), and 4th-gen (2024–present) models. Each skid plate is engineered to match the specific frame and underbody layout of its generation, ensuring proper fitment and reliable protection on and off the trail.
We usually start with the engine skid plate because the oil pan and front cross-member are the lowest and most vulnerable parts when crawling rocks or steep trails. RCI’s front skid plate protects the motor and suspension pick-up points.
RCI skid plates are available in heavy-gauge steel (maximum strength for the biggest hits) and 5052 aluminum (excellent protection at lower weight). Steel is ideal for rock crawling; aluminum is great if you want a lighter trail build.
RCI offers dedicated transmission skid plates and transfer case skid plates that bolt up under the driveline components where factory protection is minimal. They provide extra armor where the driveshaft and gears live.
Yes — especially if you plan on technical trails or steep approaches/descents. RCI fuel tank skid plates are designed to guard the tank from rock strikes and trail debris while keeping proper clearance.
Absolutely. RCI offers rear differential skid plates (sometimes with integrated midplates) that protect the diff housing and control arms from impacts — very useful in rock fields or drainage dips at speed.
Most of our Tacoma skid plates are bolt-on and use factory mounting holes or included hardware — no drilling or welding required. That means easier installation and no cutting up your truck.
Good skid plates are designed to sit close to the underside and contour to the frame so they slide over obstacles rather than hang low. RCI’s design maintains as much clearance as possible while adding protection.
Installing a full package usually involves installing engine, transmission, transfer case and fuel tank plates in sequence. Most installs can be done with common tools in a driveway or garage — and we always recommend jack stands or a lift for safety.
Yes — RCI designs skid plates with aftermarket lifts and common suspension setups in mind. If you run a significant lift or long travel system, we’ll help double-check clearances so nothing rubs when you flex.
RCI skid plates often include service access (drain cut-outs) or are easy to remove so you can do routine maintenance like oil changes without taking the whole plate off, saving you time.
Steel is heavier and offers the most impact resistance — great for hard rock crawling. Aluminum is lighter and resists corrosion very well, making it perfect if you’re balancing protection with weight savings.
After a trail run, rinse the underside to remove rocks, mud and salt. Check mounting bolts for tightness and inspect for dents or gouges. A quick cleanup and bolt check keeps everything performing well long-term.
We start with the engine skid plate, then add transmission and transfer case plates next. After that, fuel tank and diff/midplates are great to round out full protection for more technical trails.
